Orlistat

ProductDetailsPrice
Orlistat84 capsules (120 mg)£39

Orlistat is a medication used for weight management. It helps prevent the absorption of fat from the food you eat, which can make it easier to lose weight.

  • May be suitable for you if you have a BMI of 30 or above; or a BMI of above 28 with risk factors such as high blood pressure, cholesterol or diabetes.
  • Helps you lose weight by reducing the fat you absorb during digestion.
  • Side effects can include gastrointestinal issues, abdominal pain, and increased bowel movements. These side effects typically end when treatment is stopped.

When should you use Orlistat?

If you’ve previously tried losing weight through diet and exercise without results, you may consider other treatments. Orlistat is clinically proven to help you lose 50% more weight than just dieting alone.
Orlistat is only suitable for people with a BMI over 30, or people with a BMI over 28 who have conditions related to weight, such as diabetes or high blood pressure.

How does Orlistat work?

Orlistat attaches itself to some of the enzymes in your body that break down fat. This stops you from absorbing the fat from the food you eat.
The medication blocks around one third of the fat from the food you eat from being digested. Any fat that isn’t digested is passed from your body in your stools. Orlistat only blocks fat absorption, and causes weight loss, when taken alongside meals that contain fat. Taking it alongside low-fat foods has no impact.
Orlistat isn’t a stimulant or an appetite suppressant. It only works within your digestive system, so it shouldn’t affect your heart rate, brain or ability to sleep.

How do I take Orlistat?

Take one 120mg pill with a drink at each main meal that contains fat, up to a maximum of three per day. Each time you take it, your meal should contain no more than 30% of calories from fat. This can help you lose weight and reduce the potential gastrointestinal side effects from the medication.
You should evenly divide your daily intake of fat, carbohydrates and protein across three main meals. Take orlistat during meals or up to an hour afterwards. If you occasionally miss a meal, or eat a meal without fat, you can skip your dose. Taking more than three 120mg capsules a day hasn’t been shown to have any extra weight loss benefit.
Orlistat interferes with your body’s absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. You should take a daily multivitamin supplement that contains beta carotene and vitamins A, D, E and K once a day, at least two hours before or after taking orlistat.

How effective is Orilstat?

In clinical trials, almost twice as many people lost 10% or more of their body weight in one year when taking orlistat, compared to those who were dieting without treatment.

What are potential side effects?

Like all medicines, orlistat can cause side effects, including:

  • headaches
  • abdominal pain, urgent
  • sudden or more frequent bowel motions
  • oily spotting
  • fatty or soft stools
  • wind, with or without oily spotting
  • low blood sugar levels (in people with type 2 diabetes)
  • rectal pain
  • incontinence
  • bloating (in people with type 2 diabetes)
  • tooth/gum disorder

Not everybody experiences them, but if you do, they usually settle after a few weeks once you get used to the medication.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) works like two key hormones in your body: GLP-1 and GIP. These hormones help control your blood sugar and how hungry you feel.

Think of GLP-1 as a switch that tells your body to release insulin, which lowers your blood sugar, whenever it gets too high. This keeps your blood sugar levels in check. GIP helps by making your body use insulin better after you eat, so you can manage your sugar levels more easily.

By acting like both GLP-1 and GIP, Mounjaro has two key benefits:. it helps keep your blood sugar steady, and makes you feel less hungry.

Clinical studies show Mounjaro, when combined with a lower calorie diet and increased exercise, is more effective than other injectable weight loss treatments, and can help you lose up to 20% of your body weight in a year.

Wegovy, also called semaglutide, works like a natural hormone in the body called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). It affects the parts of the brain that control hunger and feeling full, making you less hungry and more satisfied. Wegovy also slows down how quickly your stomach empties, which controls your blood sugar and reduces your appetite, making it a helpful medication for anyone trying to improve their weight loss results.
